Carrying the portable air conditioner

A few months ago, my brother asked me to help him move into a new apartment.  I’ve helped him move about a dozen times already, so I knew the process would be completely awful.  At least he has gotten better at packing up his stuff, and makes sure that everything is in labeled boxes.  Unfortunately, he always seems to move in the worst type of weather.  This last time, his move was scheduled for the middle of January, and we got hit with a massive winter blizzard.  The temperature that day was ten below zero, with a horrific windchill, and snow was falling steadily.  The roads were icy and dangerous, and somehow I ended up driving the uhaul truck.  We started at this old apartment, where the heating system had already been turned off.  The place was freezing cold, and everything had to be carried down the stairs and through piles of snow.  I attempted to carry his portable air conditioner, which weighed more than your average elephant, and just about killed myself.  Once we got everything packed into the truck, I had to drive that cumbersome vehicle on slippery roads.  The heater in the truck was not working, and it was impossible to keep the windshield clear.  I was so cold at the end of the drive, I couldn’t wait to start carrying things into the new apartment.  I again got stuck hauling the portable air conditioner, this time up four flights of stairs.  I later found out that the new apartment is temperature controlled, with a complete heating and cooling system.  My brother gave me the portable air conditioner.

I really want a brand new HVAC unit

Since I was a teenager, I have been collecting antique musical instruments.  I now have an extensive collection that includes guitars, pianos, cellos, and a mandolin.  The majority of these instruments are extremely old, and I do everything I can to maintain them in peak condition.  Temperature and humidity are super important.  Severe temperature fluctuations, from hot to cold, can really take a toll on these delicate instruments.  Insufficient moisture in the air can cause the wood to dry out and crack.  Too much moisture in the air is equally as problematic, leading to wood bulging and warping.  There is also the concern of mold and corrosion.  To protect my collection, I have invested in a state-of-the-art HVAC system that includes both a humidifier and dehumidifier.  The forced air furnace and air conditioner feature variable speed technology, which means that the system automatically responds to the demands of the environment.  The unit adapts capacity to only supply the exact amount of heating or cooling needed to maintain precise indoor temperature.  I can be sure that the temperature never varies more than a single degree from the thermostat setting.  I chose a steam-style humidifier because it is the most natural method of introducing moisture into the air.  The whole-home humidifier and dehumidifier allow me to regulate moisture levels within the ideal range.  No matter what the weather is outside, I am able to create perfect conditions within my home and protect the integrity of my collection.  These musical instruments are priceless to me, and my HVAC system allows me to preserve them.

This A/C makes all the difference

Recently my girlfriend and I tried a new restaurant in town.  We went out for our anniversary a few weeks after it’s grand opening.  The building was great and the atmosphere was quaint, both cozy and sophisticated.  However we found out early into our dining experience that the restaurant was having issues with their HVAC system.  It was middle of July and nearly ninety degrees.  We barely ordered our appetizers before we called it quits and went to a different establishment.  As I was leaving I told our server I would give the place another try once the air conditioning was fixed.  We recently did just that and we are glad we did.  The food was absolutely delicious and the place was buzzing with great vibes.  The proper climate conditioning made all the difference in the world.  We were comfortable, cool and happy to spend our time and money supporting a new local business.  The air conditioning felt great, unlike last time when it was humid, sticky, and all around unbearable.  We had the same server and he told me immediately after we left the last time the owner called his HVAC provider and demanded they send down a HVAC technician at once.  Soon the restaurant was cool again and they encouraged all previous customers go come in and try it again.  Many people don’t know how important it is for a business to have functioning heating and air conditioning.  It makes all the difference, especially in an environment that has a lot of equipment running at high temperatures.  My girlfriend and I couldn’t have enjoyed our night out more, all because the restaurant fixed their A/C.

I really should replace the air conditioner

My central air conditioner is around eighteen years old, and has definitely outlived its usefulness.  It probably should have been replaced around five years ago.  Although it still operates, and provides cool air throughout the house, it doesn’t do a very good job.  When my air conditioner was brand new, my whole house was maintained at a consistent temperature.  Now, some rooms are much warmer than others, and there are hot spots in certain corners.  The air conditioner can’t begin to combat the humidity, and on super hot days, my house feels sticky and uncomfortable.  The air conditioner, however, tries its hardest to keep up with the thermostat setting.  It runs and runs, all day and all night, making a great deal of noise.  When it starts up, the air conditioner rattles as if all the components are breaking loose.  As it runs, the unit settles into a high-pitched screech, and spreads the smell of dirty pond water throughout the house.  I’ve also noticed that whenever the air conditioner is functioning, there is a great deal of dust in the air.  I am sure that the entire unit is clogged with mold, mildew, dust, and pollen.  Although I have had it serviced by a professional every year, the technician cannot keep the inner workings spotless.  Over the years, contaminants gradually build up and diminish performance and efficiency.  My air conditioner is definitely costing me more and more to run every month.  It would certainly be smart to invest in a modern air conditioner.  I could trim down my electric bill, while improving the health, comfort, and cleanliness of my house.

My dad’s air conditioner went out

You know whenever you are a child and your parents reiterate one liners to you, you never truly listen but they are always engraved into your memory. Last week I left my place to drive to work as I do every morning. However, when I went to turn my key, nothing happened. I had my car jumped and seemed to work for a moment, but then instantly shut off when I took it out of park. Long story short, I ended up having to have my alternator and battery replaced. It was not a cheap fix to say the very least. My father always told me to “Save for a rainy day”, which I tried to, but still took a hit from this bill. So later that day when my father called me to tell me that his air conditioning system went out on him, I asked if he had saved for his “rainy” day. He reassured me that no matter how much you have saved for a “rainy” day, that it still hurts to have to spend it. Apparently they forgot to update their HVAC unit whenever they were renovating the rest of the house. The AC was leaking air coolant, causing water to build up and thus create a humid indoor air quality for them. They noticed the humidity building up throughout the night, but assumed it was just a warmer evening. By the time morning came, the house was stagnant enough to where they knew to call their HVAC technician. Thanks to their “rainy” day savings account they were able to have their AC replaced without too much of a headache.

Fixing up my house

When I bought my house, I was so excited to move in and start fixing it up.  Because I was on a very tight budget, I chose a house with a great location that was in need of some major renovation.  Since I am quite handy, I knew that I could handle most of the work on my own.  I moved into the house in late August, when the weather was absolutely perfect.  I was able to leave the windows and doors wide open while I tore down plaster, ripped out floors, and painted.  I didn’t need to worry about heating or cooling, or fumes or dust.  I made energy conservation my priority and added a great deal of insulation to the walls, ceilings, and attic.  I installed Energy Star rated windows and doors, and carefully weatherstripped around them.  I spent a great deal of time, and more money that I could afford, but by the time winter arrived, the inside of my house was perfect.   Unfortunately, when the outside temperature dropped, and I tried to turn on my furnace, I realized I had a big problem.  The furnace only supplied a very small amount of tepid air that smelled like burning hair.  When it started up, it screeched and wheezed and rattled.  I didn’t dare run the thing, because I was afraid of burning the house down.  I called in an HVAC contractor to inspect the system, and he confirmed that the furnace was not worth fixing.   Having spent all of my savings fixing up the house, I had to take out a home improvement loan to invest in a brand new furnace and repairs to the duct system.

A class about HVAC equipment

When I was in college, I was always trying to take as many weird classes as possible. I think it is important to step outside of your comfort zone while in college. It helps well round you as a person so you’re ready for the real world when you graduate. This leads me to my senior year when I took a weird class in the basement of one of the campus buildings. No one ended up actually signing up for the class so it ended up just being me and the professor. What I thought was an art class actually was something even stranger. It was a class about the air conditioner business. He was a really strange guy that was super passionate about his work, so I said why not and ended up taking the course. It was kind awkward meeting him in the basement one a week for a few hours, but it was an easy grade. He taught me everything from HVAC units to furnaces. I was amazed how much there was actually to know about the HVAC business and air conditioner service. He was an HVAC technician before he taught this class, so it was interesting to hear his stories. The final exam was on heating and cooling. I had to answer questions about heater repair and heater installation, air conditioner service and furnace service. I ended up getting a good grade but it was the strangest class ever. In the end I learned a lot about the HVAC business.heating

My dream house rules!

Growing up, we never really had much. My mom worked hard to give us what we needed to survive, but the other kids in school always seemed to have more than us. I can remember sometimes having nothing in the fridge to eat for a couple days until my parents got paid at the end of the month. It became especially hard when I went to college and have to work full time and go to school full time. The other kids would go out and party and I would have to be at work every weekend. It was these struggles that made me who I am today. I worked hard and now I think I deserve good things. So now that I am finally out of college and have a good job, I want to start enjoying the things that I was never allowed to have growing up. I contacted the realtor and set up an appointment to start view houses in my area. One thing that I couldn’t stand growing up was our house that didn’t have an HVAC unit. There were no HVAC providers in our small town, so we had to use an air conditioner and furnace every year for heating and cooling. There was not air conditioner service and no furnace service so every time something broke we had to buy another unit. My new house must have an HVAC unit and HVAC technician that’s available to fix everything. I have the money now and I want to purchase their heater repair and air conditioner repair service. I told this all to my realtor and he was able to find me a house in a good area for HVAC business.

Really nice heated floors

I have always felt that heated floors are a very fancy, frivolous addition to a home. I thought that only rich people had them. I thought that only people with money to burn could afford them. Long story short, I didn’t think radiant flooring was for me at all. Thankfully, my fiancé changed my mind. It was his idea to install radiant flooring in our new bathroom. I am ashamed to say I told him no at first. Normal people make do with regular floors, and I could, too! Luckily for me, though, he kept pushing for them! It helped that he volunteered to pay for the installment. I came to learn that radiant flooring is a lot like an old school radiator. Instead of heating a big piece of metal, however, the floor itself is the heated object. The heat is gentle, though. It’s not like forced air. The heat is not dry, and the system itself is not loud. In fact, we barely notice it running. The heat is streamed through pipes or wires beneath the flooring. It’s really efficient, and it is also extremely comfortable! I feel so luxurious after I get out of the shower! I am so happy now that cold bathroom floors are a thing of the past for me. I would not trade our bathroom radiant flooring for anything. Now, I just have to convince my fiancé to put radiant heating beneath our driveway so I do not have to go shovel it every morning before work!

Wishing I had a top notch HVAC system

We were watching Aladdin with my son this week. While we were watching I was talking to my husband about our remodeling projects for the house. If I could have three wishes to pay for and do the labor on certain projects I know what they would be. First, I would remodel my bathroom. I would have the shower retiled and the floors redone. Second, I would remodel the kitchen. I would get all new countertops and cabinets. I would get state of the art appliances and a new pantry with pull out shelves. My final wish would be a new HVAC system. I would get a top notch air conditioning and heating system. It would have zoned heating and cooling with thermostats strategically placed throughout the house. The kitchen would be comfortable even when I have the oven on to bake dozens of cookies. The bedrooms would be cool and have ideal temperatures so we can sleep comfortably. The system would be quiet and powerful. I would also make sure the thermostats were smart thermostats so it would be easy to adjust the temperature no matter where I am. If I am out for the day, but know a cold front is coming in I can adjust the heater accordingly. The house would be heated and cozy when I came home. The smart thermostats can also remember my family’s normal schedule. They can change the temperature at the appropriate times of day so the heater or air conditioner is not cooling all day when it does not need to be. This final wish would be wonderful for my family.
